Support Services

Community Resources

Choices: Drug and Alcohol Counselling for Youth
A counsellor will be available on alternate Tuesdays in Student Services to offer confidential support for students with concerns around substance abuse. To make an appointment, see someone in Student Services.

Rainbows
The mission of Rainbows/Spectrum is to establish peer support groups for children and adolescents who are grieving due to a death, divorce or a painful transition. These support groups give participants an understanding of the grief process, provide an opportunity for emotional healing, assist in building a stronger sense of self-esteem and teach appropriate coping mechanisms. Trained staff run these groups. Contact Student Services for further information.

Sexual Health Clinic
The Grey Bruce Owen Sound Health Unit provides a sexual health clinic at the school on alternate Thursdays.  This service provides personal counseling on sexual health issues. Request an appointment by contacting the public health nurse at 376-9420 ext. 256 or drop in during the lunch hour on the day of the clinic. This service is friendly, confidential and comfortable.

Y Employment Counselling
An employment counsellor comes to our school on alternate Mondays to support students looking for part time, full time or summer employment. Request an appointment from Student Services.

School Resources

Computer Labs
A recent priority within G.B.S.S. has been to upgrade computer access for students. There are several programs that run in computer classrooms including all our computer science courses, business courses, communications courses and careers courses. There are labs available for other classes to use.

Library Resource Centre
The G.B.S.S. Library is open on school days at times posted on the Library door and is staffed by a teacher-librarian. The library collection of books is catalogued using the Dewey Decimal system. Books can be searched for by title, author and subject using a computerized catalogue. There is a small collection of classroom-oriented videos, especially the CBC News in Review. We subscribe to a number of magazines of interest and keep some back issues. There are 7 computers in the library that have word processing and internet capabilities. They are available for general use. Remember that if you are unsure of how to use the library and its resources, please ask the staff for help.

Subject Support Rooms
Both the English and Mathematics Departments offer extra help during the lunch hour. This is available to every student in the school and is operated on a drop-in basis. A different teacher staffs the help room each day that the room is available.

School Planner/Agenda
Every student is given a school planner (agenda book) at the beginning of the school year. The planner is an organizational tool for students. It helps them organize their life, keep track of homework, assignments and tests, manage their time and help with goal setting.  Students are strongly encouraged to use their planner on a daily basis.
